Coconuts and their counterpart’s coconut water and coconut oil are on the fast rise in the health and beauty industries, being touted as a cure all. Although, the benefits of coconut oil are still being researched and cannot be definitively stated by the American Heart Association (AHA) or the US Governments Dietary Guidelines, the benefits of coconuts can be seen in the populations such as the Tokelauans in the South Pacific who consume coconuts as a dietary staple.  So if coconuts are beneficial to our health, so should its counterpart, coconut oil.

Coconut oil is an edible oil extracted from the kernel or meat of matured coconuts. Coconut oil is high in saturated fat with almost 90% of its fatty acids being saturated. However, coconut oils saturated fat content are medium chain triglycerides rather than long chain fatty acids found in most people’s diets. Medium chain triglycerides are metabolized differently in the body, they go directly from the digestive tract to the liver where they can be used as a quick source of energy or turned into ketone bodies, to be used as energy later on. So rather than being stored in the body as fat, coconut oil is used to increase energy.

When you increase your energy output, you burn more calories and fat and thus lose weight. In addition, when coconut oil is not used for immediate energy consumption, they are turned into ketone bodies, which can be used for energy later. Ketone bodies have an appetite suppressant effect. When you reduce hunger, you eat less (in theory), which also correlates to coconut oils ability to help lose weight.

So let’s recap, consuming coconut oil can reduce ones appetite, while increasing ones energy, which increases fat burning, to ultimately help lose weight. Looks like coconut oil has some benefits after all!
