It is estimated that more than 100 million people around the world wear contact lenses. These items are very popular and technology improves them daily making them even more desirable. There are many reasons someone would prefer contacts over glasses. Here are some of the reasons. There are people who wear contact lenses, instead of glasses, for aesthetic reasons. Some people prefer to wear contact lenses because unlike glasses you cannot tell if the person is wearing them. Also, glasses in some stages of life give off a perceived notion about the person who has to wear them, which is not always the case. Another reason which people wear contact lenses is the cosmetic reason. There are a great variety of decorative contact lenses that can change the eye’s appearance.

There are those who appreciate their practical side of contact lenses. You cannot play certain sports with glasses. There is that category of people who are forced to wear contact lenses for therapeutic reasons. In this case, the contact lens is not an option.  The contact lens can be a bandage in the healing process for different diseases or injuries of the cornea and it is a luxury that heals. There are also people who have a combination of the reasons such as having colored lenses with correction power.

The first contact lenses ever made were developed out of glass. Over the years new types of contact lenses appeared such as ones made of Plexiglas, rigid gas permeable and now soft contact lenses. Modern materials include silicon hydrogel or other plastic polymers like etalficon A, galyficon A, senofilcon A. Rigid gas permeable contact lenses are recommended for people with dry eyes.

When you go to the eye doctor, they will recommend wearing contact lenses depending upon your eye structure or problems.  The doctor will determine which type of contact lens fits your eyes the best. There are different factors to be considered for the prescription like the material, the wearing time, and the shape.
Wearing daily contact lenses are safer for the eye because there is a lower risk of infection. Daily contact lenses do not require cleaning because they are single use only, meaning you throw them away at the end of the day.  Contact lenses are prepackaged in sterile package solutions.  On the other hand, extended wear contact lenses allows people to easily wear contacts for a longer period of time. Some people prefer them as their convenience is obvious, but the risk of infection is higher than at the daily type of contact lenses due to the bacterial stagnation, dust accumulation and so on.

Contact lens quality is very important. Low-quality contact lenses can damage the eye, causing irritations, hurting the eyelid or the cornea. Attention must be paid to the way the lenses are worn, kept and cleaned.
Once your doctor prescribes contact lenses to you, they will recommend where you can buy the contacts. Specialized stores exist as well as online stores. Online stores may even be less expensive for the same quality lenses. Just make sure you buy from a reputable source and brand to secure the health of your eyes.
