September 18, 2014

During the summer months is when we get the most exposure to the sun, whenever everybody wants to be outside. This can lead to sunburn in the short term, and sun damage, wrinkles and premature aging in the long term. However summer is also the best time to get loads of inexpensive produce which can provide your skin some protection from the sun.

Sun related skin damage comes from free radicals produced by the sun’s ultraviolet rays. The suns ultraviolet rays cause UV radiation. When the UV radiation comes in contact with the skin they cook the skin causing it to brown, giving you a suntan. When overcooked it produces a sunburn. UV radiation causes direct DNA damage which in turn generates free radicals. Free radicals are damaging to all parts of the body including the skin. Free radicals can cause premature aging, wrinkles, and even skin cancer. The best way to aim yourself is to protect your skin.

There are several ways to protect skin. Of course when you go out into the sun you should always wear sunscreen. This will block the harmful UV rays form damaging your skin and altering your skins DNA structure. Remember to always reapply when you are out in the sun for long periods of time or after going in the water.
