Now a days a hairstyle is just as important as the clothes that we wear. A hairstyle can make or break an outfit or make someone have a good or bad hair day. Men and women alike will go to almost any lengths to achieve their desired look. Perms, straightening, highlights, low lights, dyes, and so many more options are available for hairstyles.

Television commercials, magazine ads and movie stars tantalize the average person with silky, smooth and stylish hair that is impossible for to duplicate but does not stop us from trying. If the amount of money consumers spend on hair care products annually is any indication, most people are concerned about the appearance of their hair and strive to attain beautiful, healthy and stylish locks.  From professional salon treatments to over-the-counter serums, hair care is a big business.

Even though some people may buy the right hair care products, most don’t. Furthermore most people forget to follow basic hair care regimens that will guarantee the health and beauty of their tresses. People don’t realize the harm that some hair care products can cause to their hair. Additionally, many are also causing needless damage to their hair by participating in unhealthy hair care behavior.

So, what should you do to make sure that your hair stays healthy, shiny and strong?  To avoid all hair care disasters, follow some of these absolute don'ts of great hair care.  First off, avoid over-the-counter hair care products that look unprofessional. For example, never purchase hair color that comes in a box. Never use hair clarifier on your hair more than once in a week. Otherwise you will be stripping it of its natural moisture and essential oils. Never straighten your hair with a clothes iron. It will damage and fry the moisture out of the hair.

Over exposure to sun, chlorine and salt water can also cause irreversible damage to your hair. Sun-lightening products such as lemon juice can cause hair to become dry and brittle. This will damage the hair strands, which can only be fixed by cutting the damaged hair and allowing your hair to re-grow. Never cut your hair yourself. More than likely you will be left with an uneven mess that your stylist will need to fix, so why not just let your hair care professional do it in the first place. Avoid brushing your hair when it’s wet because this causes breakage of the strands.  Tight hair styles also cause breakage because of the tension it puts on each hair strand.

Unless you already have a stylist that you use, never choose a salon based on a sale or advertisement. Always get a referral from someone you trust, this way you can ensure that your hair is left in the best possible care. Ask your hair care professional about new hairstyles. Stylists have better knowledge about what hairstyles will go with facial structures.

In the end, hair care is a very individualized and personal thing. Feel free to add your own flair and style to your hair care routine, but remember to include hair care principles that will benefit your hair and avoid those that damage it.
